HKU CICID awarded “ICE Award 2020: Brunel Medal – Highly Commended” by the Institute of Civil Engineer (ICE)
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been occurring since around December 2019 and millions of confirmed cases have been identified in the world. In response to the outbreak and fast development of this pandemic, the HKSAR Government decided in late January 2020 to build new quarantine camps on several vacant lands for addressing the extremely urgent social need. The first such project delivered in Hong Kong is the Lei Yue Mun Quarantine Camp (LYMQC) which was developed using modular integrated construction (MiC).

To deliver the Camp with high quality and speed, the project client Architectural Services Department of HKSAR Government and the main contractor China State Construction (Hong Kong) Limited in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development (CICID) of Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) completed the project within the shortest time possible with the adoption of smart technologies.
HKU CICID as the academic collaborator of the project team set up a cloud-based web-portal for real-time logistics monitoring of module transportation and installation, developed an AI-based and computer vision enabled module detection algorithm for module lifting cycle time estimation and module installation progress prediction, and employed an UVA for taking aerial photos for site progress and safety monitoring.
HKU CICID together with the LYMQC project team has recently been awarded the ICE Award 2020: Brunel Medal – Highly Commended by the Institute of Civil Engineer (ICE). The CICID research team led by Prof Wei Pan also includes Professor CK Mak, Professor Sam Chan, and researchers on MiC and smart construction.
